The volume opens with Liao Hua (廖化) left to wait on Jinji Ridge (金鸡岭). Years pass as he learns of shifting fortunes. He later joins Liu Bei (刘备), witnesses the burning at Red Cliff (火烧赤壁) and serves in the campaign into Sichuan. Meanwhile Guan Yu (关公) escorts two sisters in law and a guarded carriage. To save time he twice chooses narrow mountain paths. On one route a hidden trap of three tripping ropes surprises the aged mount known as the Red Hare (赤兔马). The first two ropes are disguised and the horse leaps them. The third is revealed and the old horse stumbles. The weary convoy reaches Guo Family Village (郭家庄), where the breeder Guo Chang (郭常) keeps fine horses and mules. Guo's son Guo Zi (郭子) returns drunk and covets the splendid mount. He tries to steal it and is kicked and injured. His father Guo Yuanwai (郭员外) fears his son's ties to mountain bandits will bring ruin. During a banquet the household explains the local danger and presses the escort to be cautious. At Maocao Gang (茅草岗) Guan Yu (关公) secures his five whiskers in a beard protector given him by Cao Cao (曹操) and wraps his cloak to show only his face. Something in the grass sparks fear. Guan Yu draws his Green Dragon Blade (青龙刀) and strikes. Sparks fly and an iron sphere seems to roll away. Bandits then appear. Their leader displays a painted portrait to identify the rider. A young hammer-wielding man kneels and declares himself Zhou Cang (周仓). He says a monk named Elder Pujing (普净长老) showed him the portrait and told him to follow the pictured man. Guan accepts Zhou and leaves some men behind while others will rejoin Liu Bei later. Nearby a Yellow Turban remnant led by Pei Yuanshao (裴元绍) is slain by Zhao Yun (赵云). The party approaches an ancient city, Gucheng (古城), where Zhang Fei (张飞) holds the gate. Zhang governs roughly but helps the poor and gains popular praise. A scout, Sun Qian (孙干), brings a confused report and a confrontation breaks out on the walls. After fierce combat the misunderstanding is resolved. The three sworn brothers embrace and weep and Liu Bei (刘备) arrives to complete their reunion. The final episode traces Zhuge Liang's (诸葛亮) Langya family background and schooling. It explains his affection for Xiaoqiao (小乔) which left him disheartened, and how Huang Chengyan (黄承彦) arranged a marriage to Huang Yueying (黄月英) to restore his spirits. A comic tale of a wooden dog at the Huang household provides a closing anecdote that balances war and domestic life.
