Wu Song (武松) storms the Lion Tower (狮子楼) and kills Ximen Qing (西门庆) in vengeance for his brother. He returns carrying the severed head and displays it at home. Wang Po (王婆) dies of shock. Pan Jinlian (潘金莲) confesses her adultery with Ximen Qing and her role in the murder of Wu Dalang (武大郎). Rather than execute her on the spot, Wu Song collects her confession and the head as evidence to submit to the county office. The magistrate, Magistrate Wang (王县令), mindful of debts and influence, reframes the case as a fatal brawl. Wu Song is spared death but receives a branded facial punishment and is exiled to Mengzhou (孟州). The escort officers Dong Ping (董平) and Xue Ba (薛霸) accompany him with discreet kindness. Villagers line the road offering mixed praise as the county confiscates Ximen Qing's property. The exile travels through Liaocheng (聊城), crosses the Yellow River (黄河) and climbs the Taihang Mountains (太行山). Heat and thirst prolong the journey into summer. At the Ten Cross Slope inn (十字坡) Wu Song senses danger. He breaks open a bun and detects human flesh. He also suspects the wine is drugged and tests it. He pours one pot into a rat hole while his companions drink and quickly collapse. Wu Song feigns drunkenness to protect himself. At night Sun Erniang (孙二娘) returns armed and the two fight fiercely in the courtyard. Sun Erniang uses hidden skirt-leg kicks and sudden techniques. Wu Song answers with hard-hitting methods and is about to finish her when Zhang Qing (张青) appears and calls a halt. Zhang Qing recognizes Wu Song as the tiger-slayer of Jingyang Ridge (景阳冈). He reveals his connection with Lu Zhishen (鲁智深) and explains how Lu left the world, became a monk and later tended the temple gardens. The encounter diffuses immediate bloodshed and also connects Wu Song to old friends. These events mark both the legal and personal turning points after Wu Song's revenge. They also set the stage for the later uproar at the Happy Forest (快活林) and other incidents that follow his exile.
