The volume intertwines household intrigue with Jia Baoyu's strange dream. An impoverished visitor, Liu Laolao, seeks help and Wang Xifeng first teases then generously gives money and a carriage. News spreads and Zhou Rui's wife brings palace flowers to Lixiang Courtyard. Xue Baochai is reported ill and a curious recipe called the Cold Fragrance Pill is described. The flower distribution becomes awkward. Feng'er warns against entering a room. Wang Xifeng and Jia Lian are seen flirting. Lin Daiyu and Baoyu quarrel briefly over a flower. Meanwhile Baoyu naps in the Ningguo Mansion and meets the Jinghuan Fairy in the Taixu Illusory Realm. She shows him the registry of the Jinling Twelve Beauties. He hears songs and sees pageants that suggest the vanity of sensual pleasure. The fairy introduces a figure named Keqing who tempts Baoyu. They consummate in the dream and the paradise collapses into brambles and a treacherous river. Baoyu nearly drowns but is pulled back and wakes calling for Keqing. Qin Dainai overhears and the identity of Qin Keqing is hinted. After waking Baoyu shows signs of physical change. His maid Xi Ren cares for him. Their intimacy deepens and Grandmother Jia contemplates elevating Xi Ren. Xue Yima quietly maneuvers around Baochai. The narrative balances comic domestic scenes with allegorical vision. The dream's revelations foreshadow emotional complications and future tragedy.
