When Samantha Brick's life started to unravel – her company in liquidation, homeless, penniless and friendless, and on max-strength anti-depressants – it seemed that everything was going wrong. But a chance week away in France led to the most unexpected of all turn-arounds: a whirlwind romance with gun-toting, stubborn and ever-so-macho Pascal. It wasn't until she moved in to his cottage in the beautiful Lot region in south-west France that she realised how shamefully ill-equipped she was for the country life.

Like Cinderella in reverse, Samantha had to learn to cook, clean, chop wood and keep house, as well as discovering how to be a step-mum to Pascal's know-it-all ten-year-old son, finding love and happiness along the way.

Journey with British journalist Brick from the posh world of London and Los Angeles television to the French countryside and the arms of a Frenchman. Brick's world crashes down when her TV company goes bankrupt, and she can no longer afford the lifestyle that she had grown accustomed to. She battles depression, as she tries to sort out what's to become of her career and personal life. During this process, she visits a friend in France and meets Pascal, who seems like her total opposite on the surface. While she is most comfortable in designer fashions, he prefers the practicality of camouflage. In addition to their differences, Pascal has children, one a youngster whom Brick must befriend in order to move the romantic relationship along. The author adapts to her environment in France. Her routine is complete with cooking, cleaning, caring for three dogs, socializing with her French neighbors, and becoming a stepmom. Although less glamorous than the one she left behind in England, Brick's life turns out to be much more fulfilled. VERDICT This tale will draw admirers from chick lit fans to armchair travelers alike.--Lacy S. Wolfe, Ouachita Baptist Univ. Lib., Arkadelphia, AR
