Kids love Maisy — and Maisy loves books! Follow her as she discovers the wonders of the bookstore for the first time.
Today Maisy is going to the bookstore to buy a new book, but there are so many to choose from! There's a big brown book about bears, a long blue book about fish, a noisy book about trucks, and a book about things to draw and paint. Just as Maisy finds a beautiful book of rhymes that her friend Tallulah will love, out pops Charley from behind the shelves. "Ahoy, Maisy!" he says, holding a book about pirates. Now what kind of books will Cyril and Eddie choose?

The upbeat little mouse treads familiar ground in the search for literary gold. While libraries remain the most popular places for series characters to go to pick up books, Maisy eschews convention. Her trip introduces young readers to the delights of a local bookstore (the images of askew books on the shelves and arty cafe treats suggest that this particular shop is an independent rather than a typical big-box outlet). On the hunt for a new book, Maisy tries a variety of different subjects before the storekeeper suggests one on birds. While there, Maisy and her friends attend storytime and enjoy cafe munchies. Finally, Maisy goes to her friend Tallulah's house and presents her with the new book as a gift. As ever, the thick, black lines and eye-catching colors of the pages will catch the interest of everyone from toddlers up to savvy kindergartners. With an emphasis on the range of books one can browse with an eye to purchase, Cousins takes care to differentiate this trip from Maisy's previous foray to the library (Maisy Goes to the Library, 2005). Perky support aimed at young kids in the age of Amazon. (Picture book. 2-5)

Maisy encounters her friends Charley, Cyril, and Eddie while shopping at the bookstore. After bookseller Ostrich's storytime, Maisy heads to Tallulah's house to bestow a present--a book--that they read together. The simple story gives young children basic information about an unfamiliar situation (and also promotes shopping locally). Cousins's bright gouache art is reassuringly familiar.
