Complications arise when Marietta's secret love letters are accidentally found by the wrong man.
1828, the London countryside
For years, Marietta Stone has harbored a secret infatuation for the handsome Frederick Finch and has poured out her deepest feelings in a series of passionate love letters that she keeps in a locked drawer. But when Marietta's private letters are accidentally delivered to Frederick's house, she must retrieve them immediately before they fall into the wrong hands. If the letters were read by anyone else, the resulting scandal could jeopardize her reputation.
Gerard Hartwell has no time for infatuations, courtship, or even love. He must find a wife with a substantial inheritance if he wishes to save his late father's bankrupt estate. When he accidentally discovers Marietta's love letters at his cousin Frederick's estate, he strikes a bargain with her. If she helps him court her older sister, Anne, he will return the letters and help Marietta win Frederick's heart.
Marietta agrees, and the two quickly pretend to be courting in order to spend time with their individual love interests. Yet, what appeared to be a straightforward bargain becomes complicated when Gerard realizes that the more time he spends with Marietta, the more he wishes he could court her for real. But can he persuade Marietta to give him a chance when her heart might belong to another man?

During the last season, Etta Stone's mother and Mrs. Finch engaged in a vulgar altercation over a possible suitor for Etta's sister, Anne. Now members of the neighboring families are forbidden to meet. Etta--whose interests in business and animal husbandry dismay her mother, who finds her horribly lacking in womanly arts--has always hoped to marry Frederick Finch and is mortified when secret letters she wrote but never intended to send end up at Rosemary Manor. Defying their mother, the sisters go to retrieve the letters and find that they're in the possession of Gerard Hartwell. He's encouraging his mother to stay with her sister, Mrs. Finch, as he attempts to conceal the family's near-bankruptcy. If he can make a good marriage, Frederick will lend Gerard the money to get back on his feet. Gerard and Etta agree to pretend to be courting to make Frederick jealous while Anne sees Gerard's good points. The fake courtship takes some interesting twists. Wright's latest feel-good Regency romance, following Windsong Manor (2023), will please all who love the traditions of the genre.

After her love letters are accidentally sent to her neighbor Frederick Finch, Marietta Stone visits his estate with her sister Anne to steal the letters back before they can be discovered. Unfortunately, Frederick's cousin Gerard Hartwell intercepts Etta and takes one of the letters. Gerard was once childhood friends with Etta and Anne, but now he is heir to his late father's impoverished estate. He coerces Etta into helping him court her sister, who has a sizable dowry that could save his ruined estate; Gerard promises to return Etta's love letter once his courtship is successful. Etta reluctantly agrees, as Gerard also promises to help her attract Frederick's attention. Etta and Gerard end up spending more time together than with their love interests and quickly fall back into a familiar friendship. Once Gerard comes to see Etta as a grown woman, he's determined to court her rather than her sister. VERDICT Readers will enjoy how Etta and Gerard try to detangle themselves from the messiness of their lives and loves in Wright's (Windsong Manor) latest, reminiscent of the humor and romantic hoax in Jenny Han's To All the Boys I've Loved Before.--Eve Stano
