Framed
Astonishing True Stories of Wrongful Convictions
“Each of these stories is told with astonishing power. They are packed with human drama, with acts of shocking villainy and breathtaking courage. But these are more than just gripping true stories—they are a clarion call for reforming the tragic flaws in our criminal justice system.”—David Grann, author of Killers of the Flower Moon
John Grisham is known worldwide for his bestselling novels, but it’s his real-life passion for justice that led to his work with Jim McCloskey of Centurion Ministries, the first organization dedicated to exonerating innocent people who have been wrongly convicted. Together they offer an inside look at the many injustices in our criminal justice system.
A fundamental principle of our legal system is a presumption of innocence, but once someone has been found guilty, there is very little room to prove doubt. These ten true stories shed light on Americans who were innocent but found guilty and forced to sacrifice friends, families, and decades of their lives to prison while the guilty parties remained free. In each of the stories, John Grisham and Jim McCloskey recount the dramatic hard-fought battles for exoneration. They take a close look at what leads to wrongful convictions in the first place and the racism, misconduct, flawed testimony, and corruption in the court system that can make them so hard to reverse.
Impeccably researched and told with page-turning suspense as only John Grisham can deliver, Framed is the story of winning freedom when the battle already seems lost and the deck is stacked against you.

Over 2.3 million Americans are currently incarcerated, some for crimes they never committed. Novelist Grisham (Camino Ghosts) and activist McCloskey (coauthor, When the Truth Is All You Have), whose organization Centurion Ministries has exonerated 70 people, present 10 stories of grievous errors in the criminal justice system. These errors stole freedom from dozens of innocent individuals who collectively served decades behind bars, some of whom remain there still. From browbeating interrogations to botched autopsies, there is seemingly no end to the ineptitude that can land a person in prison despite the undeniable impossibility that they committed the crime. Narrator Michael Beck presents these shocking stories of discrimination and disorder with a somber and stirring tone. Though the authors alternate in writing each chapter, their complementary style combined with Beck as the single primary narrator yields a cohesive listening experience. A preface, read by the authors, explains their motivation to speak out against a broken judicial system. An accompanying PDF contains additional notes and acknowledgments. VERDICT This audio will appeal to listeners seeking a thoroughly researched, thought-provoking collection of true crime that highlights this country's need for criminal justice reform. Recommended for fans of Barred by Daniel S. Medwed.--Lauren Hackert

There's a presumed sense of fairness in our justice system. But Michael Beck's harrowing performances of 10 true stories of devastating injustices reveal the error of that presumption. A neighbor is falsely accused of murdering a woman on the same day that his wife has major surgery. Four Navy sailors are pushed into falsely confessing to a vicious crime in Norfolk. A man goes to prison for a heinous crime another man admits to committing. In each of these accounts, John Grisham and Jim McCloskey--who lend their voices to research-backed intros--interrogate the negligence, corruption, and narrow-mindedness that lead to wrongful convictions. Beck's narration treats each story, and its victim, with sincerity and care. It's a much-needed investigation of investigations gone horribly wrong. A.A.H. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine
