When the parents of Third Officer Harold Rossi receive a terse letter informing them of their son's death aboard the supertanker Aurora Victorious, their efforts to get more details are ignored by the ship's owner, the Hercules Shipping Company. The Rossis hire James Raiford and Julie Campbell of the Touchstone Agency to try to learn more. After getting nowhere in the U.S., Julie heads to England to press for answers, and Raiford manages to wangle a temporary berth aboard the Aurora Victorious in the Persian Gulf as an electronics officer. As Julie fights for information in London, Raiford struggles for survival on a ship with a brutal first mate and a ragtag crew. Burns succeeds in making life aboard a huge oil tanker both fascinating and scary. Readers will look forward to the further adventures of Julie and Raiford. -

Harold Rossi was third officer aboard the Aurora Victorious, a supertanker owned by the Hercules Shipping Company. After his parents receive a terse letter from Hercules informing them of their son's accidental death at sea, they hire the father-daughter detective team of James and Julie Raiford to investigate. The Raifords subsequently align themselves with Marine Carriers Insurance, which could avoid paying a $5 million claim for Golden Dawn, a Hercules tanker that recently sank, if, in the course of the Raifords investigation, they uncover negligence on the part of Hercules. Further, such a finding would earn the Raifords a quarter of a million dollars. So, using his electronics background, James secures a position aboard the Aurora while Julie travels to London to interview the principals at Hercules. The narrative shifts from ship to shore as the Raifords each uncover small clues that may lead to a larger criminal enterprise. Burns, the author of a detective series starring Denver cop Gabe Wager, brings an understated style and attention to background detail to this satisfying mystery.
