Patience Cavanaugh has a mind of her own. Moving to Montana after the death of her fiance and inheriting a run-down boardinghouse, she discovers that life in a frontier town can be difficult. But, not as challenging as dealing with the local sheriff, Jedidiah Jones, when she asks him to do some minor repairs. In exchange, Jedidiah needs to feed the jail's prisoners. After a rocky start, the two realize that they need each other although neither wants to be the first to admit it. VERDICT Brendan ("Heart of the West" series) delivers a charmingly quirky and endearing romance that reveals how love and faith can heal two damaged souls. Rendering skillfully depicted protagonists and an authentic Western sense of place, she provides plenty of pleasant escape reading for fans of Kellie Coates Gilbert and Lori Copeland.

Sheriff Jedediah Jones is tasked with keeping the peace in the small mining town of Nevada City, Montana, and there is something irritating yet endearing about how pretty and pious Patience Cavanaugh interferes. The arrival of a handsome, mysterious new boarder at her Creekside Inn sparks Jed's jealousy, and Patience struggles to negotiate friendship and affection for the two men. When a gang of cattle rustlers strikes a local ranch, a man is found dead. Jed must face his dark pastand its hidden connection to Patienceto reveal the truth. The compelling first installment in best-selling inspirational author Brendan's new Virtues and Vices of the Old West series, this is a sweet love story with plenty of nods to the iconic Old West, complete with rough gunslingers, vigilante posses, and breathless shootouts. It is innocent in terms of passion and rich with the sentiments of daily Christian living, creating the perfect Christian-romance blend for readers, who will appreciate Patience's thoughtful devotionals even as they swoon over Jedediah's frontier chivalry.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
