Frank Lipman, M.D., is “at the vanguard of a revolutionary way to deliver medical care” (O, The Oprah Magazine). A leading expert in the field of functional medicine, Dr. Lipman focuses on the root causes of illness and guides his patients to the deepest, most lasting sources of wellness. In this book, he and coauthor Danielle Claro make life-changing health advice available to all. Their book offers the cutting-edge secrets to optimal health in a stylish, lushly illustrated format—a spoonful of beauty to help the wellness tips go down.
The New Health Rules wades through the often contradictory information that bombards us daily and delivers more than 100 actionable tips that will improve every aspect of our health—body, mind, and soul. Readers will learn simple rules for getting a good night’s sleep, why a daily dose of sunlight is crucial, and which toxic cosmetics and kitchen products should be tossed. Here Lipman and Claro teach us which foods help prevent Alzheimer’s, why sugar is so destructive, and how to bring “good bacteria” into the digestive system—providing an arsenal of easy-to-process tips and guidelines to make us stronger, healthier, and happier.

Lipman (Spent: End Exhaustion and Feel Great Again) and Claro (editor at large, Real Simple magazine) team up to create this new handbook of tips for better health. Originally a doctor of internal medicine, Lipman has been a leader in the integrative and function medicine movement. He founded the Eleven Eleven Wellness Center in New York City and is a speaker on wellness for many popular magazines including O, The Oprah Magazine and Men's Journal. Here he presents his key lifestyle guidelines for clean, healthful living. With each instructive discussion limited to at most a few paragraphs, the book can be used as a daily dose of health, introducing bite-sized ways to change habits and establish wellness a little at a time. The 100-plus topics, arranged into sections on "Eating," "Moving," "Boosting," "Healing," and "Living," are frequently paired with lovely photographs, adding to the general appeal. VERDICT The attractive layout of this book will appeal to readers. The tips offered are useful, but for a firm grounding in the concepts of renewed health and vitality, the title should be paired with one of Lipman's previous works.--Crystal Renfro, Georgia Inst. of Technology Lib. & Information Ctr., Atlanta

This easy-to-read guide to chemical-free, healthy living makes good use of beautiful photos of the woods, the beach at sunset, and dairy-free dark chocolate. Coauthor Claro, deputy editor of Real Simple, helps Lipman, a New York City medical doctor, make a convincing case against sugar, bread, red wine, and antibacterial soaps (the ingredient quaterniumm-15 can release formaldehyde). Without footnotes or end notes, it's impossible to know the sources behind some of the authors' scary statements. (Do deodorants really contain antifreeze? Do the chlorine and fluoride added to tap water really hurt the thyroid, which controls metabolism?) Lipman, the founder of the supplement company Be Well, hardly seems like an unbiased source when he promotes some unusual formulas, including a dietary detox mix with antimicrobial and antiparasitic herbs like black walnut hull, berberine, grapefruit seed extract, wormwood, and bearberry. Still, who can argue with good advice like buying less stuff and listening to mellow music ? Get ready to feel more Zen.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
