England, 1940. Clare Childs knew life would change when she unexpectedly inherited the Maggie Bright—a noble fifty-two-foot yacht. In fact, she's counting on it. But the boat harbors secrets. When a stranger arrives, searching for documents hidden onboard, Clare is pulled into a Scotland Yard investigation that could shed light on Hitler's darkest schemes and prompt America to action.
Across the Channel, Hitler's Blitzkrieg has the entire British army in retreat with little hope for rescue at the shallow beaches of Dunkirk. With time running out, Churchill recruits civilian watercraft to help. Hitler is attacking from land, air, and sea, and any boat that goes might not return. Yet Clare knows Maggie Bright must answer the call—piloted by an American who has refused to join the war effort until now and a detective with a very personal motive for exposing the truth.
The fate of the war hinges on this rescue. While two men join the desperate fight, a nation prays for a miracle.

Two-time Christy winner Groot (Flame of Resistance) goes back to World War II in this affecting novel set at the beginning of the war. Based on the historical evacuation of 340,000 British and Allied troops from Dunkirk, France, in 1940, as Nazi Germany overran Western Europe, the story alternates between England, where Clare Childs has inherited the yacht Maggie Bright, and France, where a small cadre of British soldiers is making its way to the Dunkirk beaches for evacuation. Groot has a strong grasp of the period's history and zooms in on the emotional dynamics of soldiers experiencing a profoundly bitter moment in history. The plot thread in England involving the eventual deployment of the Maggie Bright to help evacuate troops is not as engrossing as the soldiers' story, which is woven with tension, big moral questions, and memorable minor characters, among them Captain Jacobs, a Milton-spouting, head-injured soldier. A romantic plot thread provides some relief from the grimness of the war plot, and the faith element is subtle yet essential. Groot may gain readers with this book, since WWII draws interest across genres; she deserves a bigger audience. Agent: Kathryn Helmers, Creative Trust. -

In 1940, Clare Childs unexpectedly inherits a yacht, the Maggie Bright. She also inherits its secrets, hidden documents someone is willing to kill for. As British and Allied troops retreat from the advancing German forces to the French port of Dunkirk, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill decides that civilian craft must be put into service to rescue the surviving army from certain defeat and captivity. It looks like Hitler's war machine may win this one, but the Fuhrer didn't count on the Maggie Bright coming to the rescue. VERDICT Groot (The Sentinels of Andersonville) vividly portrays both the heroism and the horrors of World War II. The graphic descriptions of Nazi atrocities may be too much for some readers, but with the July release of Christopher Nolan's film Dunkirk, there is bound to be interest.
