One case from her past defines homicide detective Abby Hart.
With a possible serial killer stalking elderly women in Long Beach, California, Abby's best lead is Luke Murphy, an irritating private investigator who saw a suspect flee the scene of the latest homicide. When Abby discovers that the most recent victim is related to the governor, she's anxious to talk to him about a cold case that's personal to her—one Luke is interested in as well.
As she learns more about the restaurant fire that took her parents' lives years ago, Abby discovers why Luke is so invested in finding the ones responsible. The more they uncover, though, the more questions they have. Can Abby find peace without having all the answers?

Homicide detective Abby Hart is secretly Abby Morgan, who was rescued as a six-year-old child when her parents were murdered, and burned, in their restaurant. Luke Murphy is a private investigator and nephew of the cook who also died in the fire. Luke is also a witness in the serial-killer case Abby is working on. California governor Rollins was a partner of Abby's parents, and when she and Luke talk to him about the serial-killer case and Abby reveals her identity, she is quickly shut out from any further investigation. Luke entices her to join forces with him to work on this cold case, and soon both are drawn into danger as it becomes clear that many people, even those close to Abby, don't want the old case solved. This is the start of a smart new series for retired police officer-turned-author Cantore (Accused, 2012). Interesting procedural details, multilayered characters, lots of action, and intertwined mysteries offer plenty of appeal. Fans of J. A. Jance may also enjoy this.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
