Protecting 11-year-old Cara Castino remains Eve Duncan’s highest priority in bestseller Johansen’s thrilling 20th novel featuring the Atlanta-based forensic sculptor (after Hide Away), the conclusion of a trilogy within the longer series that began with Shadow Play. Natalie Castino, Cara’s sociopathic mother, succeeds in abducting the girl from her hiding place in the Scottish Highlands and taking her to Moscow, where Natalie’s father lives. Eve fears that Cara might meet the same fate as the girl’s twin sister, Jenny, for whose death Natalie was responsible. In Russia, Eve joins forces with Cara’s special friend from the Highlands, Jock Gavin, in an effort to rescue Cara. Eve’s longtime love, former FBI agent Joe Quinn, lends support, but nothing goes as smoothly as it should, and Eve soon finds herself fighting for her life and the life of her unborn child. Full of mysticism and mystery, this fast-paced novel is sure to appeal to all fans of romantic suspense. Agent: Andrea Cirillo, Jane Rotrosen Agency. -

Picking up where Hide Away (2016) left off, Johansen's series heroine, forensic sculptor Eve Duncan, is pregnant; her lover, Joe Quinn, is hovering about; and they are still protecting 11-year-old Cara from her drug-lord father and equally murderous mother. They are all in Scotland, where Eve's adopted daughter, Jane, is taking part in an archaeological dig that is really more of a treasure hunt. There are a lot of paranormal goings-on this time, as Eve's deceased daughter, Bonnie, continues to speak to her, and Jane hears things in the Scottish mist. There's action, too, as Cara is snatched by her sociopathic mother, and the setting moves from Scotland to Russia. Johansen's rabid fan base will flock to this conclusion to a two-part story arc, but new readers will be best served starting with Hide Away. The Eve Duncan series offers a winning combination of thriller elements and love story, with paranormal trimmings. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: The Eve Duncan faithful were left hanging at the end of the first installment of this two-parter and will swarm to this one.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.) -
