When Wyoming Highway Patrolman Rosey Wayman is transferred from Walt's jurisdiction to the beautiful and imposing landscape of the Wind River Canyon, she starts receiving mysterious "officer needs assistance" calls—despite the area's notorious lack of radio communication. More inexplicable still,
they seem to be coming from Bobby Womack, a legendary Arapaho patrolman who met a fiery death in the canyon almost a half century ago. With no one else able to hear the calls, Rosey's supervisor begins to doubt her sanity—until Walt and Henry Standing Bear arrive on the scene, determined to find
the troublemaker who is surely playing a prank on their former colleague. But after a few days in the misty, enigmatic canyon, they discover that the mystery goes much deeper than they'd imagined. Will Walt and Henry be able to put things to right, both for Rosey and The Highwayman himself?
An otherworldly tale that has even confirmed skeptic Walt contemplating the existence of ghosts, The Highwayman is a wonderfully entertaining story starring the hero of the New York Times bestselling Longmire series.

Wyoming’s scenic Wind River Canyon provides the setting for this atmospheric Walt Longmire novella, an update, according to Johnson (The Spirit of Steamboat) in the acknowledgments, of a Charles Dickens ghost story, “The Signal-Man.” For three months, Rosey Wayman, a Highway Patrol officer, has been on duty in the canyon, and on some nights, she receives a distress call on her radio: “officer needing assistance.” Rosey, who’s due for a psychiatric evaluation, thinks the call is from Bobby Womack—a patrolman who perished nearly 50 years earlier while trying to stop a runaway fuel tanker in a canyon tunnel. Longmire, the sheriff of Absaroka County, and his sidekick, Henry Standing Bear, assume there has to be a natural explanation, but in their search for the truth they learn some surprising things about Bobby and the long-ago theft of a cache of Morgan silver dollars. You don’t have to be a fan of Longmire, the hit Netflix series, to appreciate this clever tale. 10-city author tour. Agent: Gail Hochman, Brandt & Hochman Literary Agents. -

Reader Guidall continues his long association with Craig Johnson’s Longmire series. In a slight departure for the series, this short audiobook is a nice combination of mystery and ghost story. Highway patrol person Rosey Wayman fears she is losing her sanity. In a remote section of her mountainous jurisdiction, she’s receiving calls over her radio that an officer needs assistance. The calls are in the voice of long-dead Arapaho patrolman, Bobby Womack. Concern for her condition leads her supervisor to call in Sheriff Walt Longmire and Henry Standing Bear to help uncover who, or what, is behind the mysterious calls. Their investigation will take them back in time to examine Womak’s fiery death, a missing treasure of silver coins, and maybe a glimpse into the great beyond. Guidall knows these characters inside and out. His raspy, laconic narration fits perfectly with the author’s down-home storytelling. A Viking hardcover.
