Women and the Military

Global Lives in Focus

ebook

1 of 1 copy available
This addition to the Women and Society around the World series explores the roles, challenges, and accomplishments of women in the military in countries across the globe.
Around the world, millions of men serve in their countries' militaries, be it on land, on the seas, or in the air. But while many militaries have opened all positions to women, even those on the front lines, others remain closed. Countries have cited a number of reasons for their policies, including changing views of women and the military, conscription, and economic and demographic trends.
Written by a professor of comparative politics at the United States Military Academy at West Point and an active duty army major, this book seeks to provide an understanding of women's roles in militaries around the world. The book is organized by region, exploring societal and cultural views of masculinity and war, as well as factors influencing changing views of women and the military, including conscription and economic and demographic trends. Topics also include sexual harassment, recruitment, and views on women's physicality and strength. High school students, undergraduates, and general readers will find this cross-cultural study a fascinating and important resource.

In this overview of women and militaries, Beitler (comparative politics, U.S. Military Acad.; Women's Roles in the Middle East and North Africa) and Gerstein (international relations, U.S. Military Acad.) touch on every region of the globe. Chapters are devoted to the U.S. and Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, Central and East Asia, South and Southeast Asia, and Oceania. The authors discuss benevolent and hostile sexism, the association of masculinity and warfare, historical and current roles of women in war and peacekeeping, and more. Consideration of sexual harassment is disappointingly brief for every region but Australia; for the U.S., for instance, Beitler and Gerstein cite unspecified programs and efforts. They explore other issues around the integration of women into military organizations (like the argument that the presence of women weakens unit cohesion and effectiveness) and sociocultural views regarding women's participation. A great deal of the data here is supported by citations, but the abundant information is often disjointed and not always effectively organized, expressed, or analyzed. There are a chronology (1572-2019) and extensive bibliographies (at the end of each chapter, as well as at the conclusion of the volume). VERDICT This work's wide range (albeit limited by data availability) will make it a useful initial source for students of sociology, women's studies, and the military.--Patricia D. Lothrop, formerly of St. George's Sch., Newport, RI

This volume focuses on gender inequality in the armed forces by highlighting specific examples of customs and policies to help show how women have overcome cultural and social barriers. Noting that, cross-culturally, most impediments to women's military service stem from political and legal barriers based on cultural perspectives and norms surrounding the belief that men are better suited to combat and women to peace, each section, divided by geographic region, treats topics such as societal views of masculinity and warfare, changing views of women in the military, arguments against women in the military, and difficulties in recruiting and retaining women. Narrowing the focus to specific countries, topics covered are the history of women in the military (including past and current statistics), factors influencing change, women in combat zones, and sexual harassment. Further reading at the end of each country section includes books, websites, and journal articles. Enhanced by case studies in text boxes and black-and-white photos, the well-written though slightly dry articles give a wealth of information and insight. The volume ends with a thirty-plus page bibliography and an accurate index.
