Who's murdering vampires in Los Angeles and throwing the bodies into the Dedhams' pool? Each victim has been branded, a distinct mark that is the calling card of femme fatale vampire Ann Hayes. The contemptuous undead beauty declares her innocence, but can the vampires believe her? Has Ann returned to reclaim Doug Dedham, whom she once loved? Or is she being framed?
Complicating matters are Madison's burgeoning feelings for both sexy vampire Colin Reddy and fellow "beater" detective Mike Notchey. The stakes have never been higher as Madison and the vampires race to solve the mystery and stop the killer.

Former waitress Madison Rose now works for the California Vampire Council in Jaffarian's smart sequel to 2010's Murder in Vein, but finding deadâor undeadâvampire bodies in the swimming pool of the Topanga Canyon home of her vampire friends, the Dedhams, isn't in the job description. Since most cops don't know vampires exist, Madison's LAPD detective friend, Mike Notchey, can't do much through normal channels, so much of the sleuthing falls to Madison. Is this the work of Annabelle Fogle, a seductive and dangerous vampire with a grudge, or is someone attacking the council? Through refreshingly intelligent investigative work, Madison arrives at some conclusions that may lead to the truth, but along the way she must also deal with some difficult personal issues. Dark humor, edgy suspense, and an appealing cast of characters will leave readers anxiously awaiting the next book.

The second Madison Rose vampire mystery (following Murder in Vein, 2010) finds the human assistant to the California vampire council comfortably living with older vampire couple Doug and Dodie Dedham. Madison is even cultivating a romance with L.A. cop Mike Notchey, one of the few humans who know of the vampire world. Madison's life takes an abrupt turn for the worse, though, when she walks out on the patio early one morning and finds a body floating in the pool. The victim is a dangerously wounded vampire with a stake nick to the heart and a brand that sends a clear message to Doug and fellow council member Colin. Madison is somewhat involved in the investigation through her role on the council, but she digs deeper on her own, taking advantage of certain abilities she possesses that vampires lack (like being able to go outside in the daylight). Recommend Madison to urban-fantasy readers in general and especially to fans of Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampire novels.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)
