“All hail the queen of scream. A Sliver of Darkness is C. J. Tudor at her spine-tingling, nightmare-inducing best. Read it if you dare.”—Chris Whitaker, New York Times bestselling author of We Begin at the End
Time slips. Doomsday scenarios. Killer butterflies. C. J. Tudor’s novels are widely acclaimed for their dark, twisty suspense plots, but with A Sliver of Darkness, she pulls us even further into her dizzying imagination.
In “The Lion at the Gate,” a strange piece of graffiti leads to a terrifying encounter for four school friends. In “Final Course,” the world has descended into darkness, but a group of old friends make time for one last dinner party. In “Runaway Blues,” thwarted love, revenge, and something very nasty stowed in a hat box converge. In “Gloria,” a strange girl at a service station endears herself to a coldhearted killer, but can a leopard really change its spots? And in “I’m Not Ted,” a case of mistaken identity has unforeseen fatal consequences.
Riveting, macabre, and explosively original, A Sliver of Darkness is C. J. Tudor at her most wicked and uninhibited.

Tudor's (The Chalk Man) latest is an imaginative and entertaining collection of short stories. The universe as created by Tudor is not a safe one--it is full of dangerous elements like stone-cold killers and menacing graffiti, of man-eating butterflies and all-consuming darkness. Settings run the gamut from sketchy neighborhoods full of monsters to cruise ships at the end of the world. While the quality of stories in a collection can be somewhat inconsistent, Tudor's is solid overall; particular standouts include the noir "Runaway Blues" and the grimly comedic "I'm Not Ted." The audiobook's stellar cast (Richie Campbell, Dakota Blue Richards, Roy McMillan, Richard Armitage, and Adam Sims) immerses listeners, and Tudor's introductions to each story and to the collection as a whole are a refreshing window into her life and the genesis of her work. VERDICT Good for fans of short stories and horror, but share also with writers, artists, and creators who can relate to Tudor's struggles as an author torn between the creative process and real life.--James Gardner

Tudor's short story collection involves mostly persistent feelings of mounting dread rather than abject horror, although listeners will encounter terrifying moments. Her stories unfold in modern British spaces, and the narrators are consistently superb. Dakota Blue Richards captures an aching eeriness as a commercial cruise ship is forced to carry on its daily routine for decades after a mysterious mass event occurs on land. Adam Sims's gravelly voice unwinds the tale of a mysterious jazz musician with a secret. Richard Armitage dryly conveys a story about a malevolent entity encountered during a nighttime walk. Together, these stories create a creepy and engrossing listening experience. S.P.C. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine
