Space is a specialized architectural monthly which was first published in 1966 and has been at the vanguard of covering the arts and culture scene here in Korea ever since. The magazine features not only architecture, but also diverse cultural and artistic activities across the spectrum of the fine arts. Space offers its readers a wide variety of architectural news throughout Korea, in Asia, and the world in general. Housing Experiments on the Threshold: Unsangdong Architects 경계 위의 주거 실험: 운생동건축사사무소 • Unsangdong Architects (hereinafter, Unsangdong) seeks to investigate quality of life by reconfiguring forms of housing that are familiar to us in deliberately unfamiliar ways. Their work moves between two attitudes – one grounded in the conventions of housing, the other in estrangement – while pursuing experiments that assemble new possibilities through the creation and recombination of prototypes at the level of partial elements. Confronted with the practical constraints of construction costs and buildability, Unsangdong often makes strategic choices that privilege conceptual clarity over fine-grained detail. These housing experiments and strategies span a wide range of typologies and scales, from detached houses to large-scale for-sale apartment complexes and even technology-intensive residential testbeds. Through four recent residential projects that are at once social and private, experimental yet grounded in reality, this FRAME examines the new questions posed by Unsangdong regarding the future of housing in our time.운생동건축사사무소(이하 운생동)는 우리에게 익숙한 주거를 낯설게 재구성함으로써 삶의 본질을 탐구하고자 한다. 주거의 관습과 낯섦을 오가는 두 가지 태도, 부분적 요소에 대한 프로토타입을 만들고 조합해 새로운 것을 만들어내는 실험, 공사비와 시공성이라는 현실적 한계 앞에 디테일보다 개념을 우선하는 전략적 선택. 이러한 운생동의 주거 실험과 전략 대상은 단독주택부터 대규모 분양 아파트, 스마트 기술이 집약된 주거 단지까지 다양한 형식과 규모를 아우른다. 사회적이면서도 사적인, 실험적이면서도 현실적인 주거 근작 네 개를 통해 운생동이 던지는 ‘우리 시대 주거의 미래’를 향한 새로운 질문을 살펴보자.
